Saves the Day, Into It Over It, Hostage Calm

When: Mon., Sept. 30, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $15-18
On its first three albums, Saves the Day combined buzz saw guitars and racing rhythms with lyrical scorn and shout-along hooks. It was visceral, satisfying, fun. But as a revolving lineup began to plague the band, so, seemingly, did a somewhat neutered string of follow-ups that have been far less aggressive, undermined by plodding tempos and the sort of whiny vocals that gave "emo" a bad name. They may lean a little heavily on the first part of the pop-punk equation, but there's a handful of worthwhile tracks on the New Jersey quartet's new self-titled album. —Spencer Griffith
