Saves the Day, Bayside, I Am the Avalanche, Transit

When: Fri., Nov. 11, 7:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $15-18

Opening for Weezer at the RBC Center in 2002, Saves the Day played one of the best sets my teenage eyes and ears had experienced. Two years later, their Lincoln Theatre set bored me to tears. It's no coincidence that the latter drew heavily from In Reverie, which marked the band's shift from simple but effective pop-punk into more ambitious and overwrought territory. Three albums later, Saves the Day still can't pull it off: Its latest, Daybreak, opens with a ham-handed "suite" that's five movements and nearly 11 minutes long, and fairly short on enjoyable ideas. Slick emo-rockers Bayside and Transit join the bill, along with the commercial punk sneer of I Am The Avalanche. —Spencer Griffith
