Gza & Muggs

Cat's Cradle—At one point, Wu-Tang's GZA and Cypress Hill's Muggs could make weighty claims to hip-hop heaven, but the underground they inspired with divergent tips now welcomes these visionaries with big ideas for small clubs into its own fold. Expect stuff from their collaboration, Grandmasters. Kaze and Self Scientific open at 9:30 p.m.--Grayson Currin

Tift Merritt

American Tobacco Warehouse—She's shared Austin City Limits with Ryan Adams, the guy commonly credited for helping her find a label. She's been nominated for a Grammy. And Tift Merritt, with her 2004 sophomore album Tambourine, has made the Billboards. Merritt has been writing her third album and resting before heading into the studio in the fall. She's tight-lipped about the direction of the new material, but she'll be premiering some of it at this show, an engagement she took as a show of gratitude for the support she's received from WRAL and Jim Goodmon. Brad Rice joins on guitar, with bassist and vocalist Jay Brown and steel guitarist Greg Readling. Tickets are $30, and the show starts at 8 p.m. --Grayson Currin

Dang nhat minh

White Lecture Hall—Duke holds a two-day celebration of Dang Nhat Minh, Vietnam's greatest filmmaker. After a Friday night double feature of When the Tenth Month Comes and Season of Guavas (7 and 9 p.m.), Dang will appear to discuss his most famous film, Nostalgia for Countryland, at 7 p.m. --David Fellerath
