Thad Cockrell & Roman Candle

Local 506--Before Thad Cockrell moved to Nashville in 2004, this double bill was common: Cockrell and Candle staged a two-night stand at Tyler's Taproom in Carrboro that summer, allowing their mutual producer Chris Stamey to record the sessions. Those shows were testaments to kindred-spirit cooperation, rendering a gorgeous Beach Boys cover, amped-up versions of Cockrell's warm-voiced heartache perfection, and charging takes on Skip and Logan Matheny's top-down, arms-open, big-wheeled power-pop rock. Cockrell continues to score big as a singer of his own songs, and it would surprise few to see his work turned into someone's chart-topper. Candle's Stamey-produced second album, The Wee Hours Revue, will be released on V2 in June. Maybe fame has our neighbors at its doorstep? The $10 show starts at 9 p.m. --Grayson Currin

Bynum

Haw River Festival

Old Bynum Bridge--For 17 years, the Haw River Assembly has presented its Haw River Festival, a near-perfect combination of environmental education, artistic expression and musical guests. This year, draw with chalk on the Bynum Bridge, learn about issues affecting the Haw, hike the river, bid on Clyde Jones' outsider work, and hear music from the never, Saludos Compay, The Carolina Chocolate Drops and more. It all happens from 1-6 p.m. The Assembly requests a $5 donation for adults and $3 for kids under 14; the babies pass gratis. Visit www.hawriver.org for more info. --Grayson Currin
