Sarah Shook & the Devil, The Straight 8s

When: Thu., July 11, 10 p.m. 2013
Price: Free

You picture Sarah Shook in a simple gingham dress peeking around the barn door. Her warm alto twang recalls the last sultry days of summer, the air thick with heat like her drawling vocals. The Pittsboro artist plays old-school country tinged with Southern gothic and shadowed by lonely peals of pedal steel. Relative newcomer Shook is joined by Chapel Hill's Straight 8s, who've been at it over a decade. Their high-energy rockabilly shares Shook's traditionalist streak, sounding a lot closer to the poppy spirit of Buddy Holly and Bill Haley than their garage-minded peers. They're celebrating the release of their third album, Girl Trouble. —Chris Parker
