Sarah Dessen

When: Thu., June 4, 7 p.m. 2015

THE REGULATOR BOOKSHOP—Chapel Hill-based Young Adult fiction titan Sarah Dessen is almost frustrating in her consistent ability to put out new books, blog regularly and be a very nice person in her frequent appearances. Her latest, Saint Anything, continues this aggravating trend with its thoughtful tale of Sydney, who must redefine herself when her seemingly preferred older brother Peyton goes into a self-destructive spiral that includes drunk driving and a jail sentence. Dessen writes about young people who are realistic and thoughtful without being cloying, whiny, or vampires. She knows the most apocalyptic thing is simply growing up. 7 p.m., free, 720 Ninth St., Durham, 919-286-2700, —Zack Smith
