Sara Benincasa

When: Mon., Feb. 27, 7-8 p.m. 2012

21st-century Renaissance woman Sara Benincasa is coming back to North Carolina to read from Agorafabulous!: Dispatches From My Bedroom, her memoir of overcoming crippling agoraphobia and eventually becoming the comedian/ writer/ commentator/ social media smartass that she is today. But even though the New York-based Benincasa hails from New Jersey, she's always had a special connection with this state. She attended Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa in her younger days, and it was just a few years ago that she chose Carrboro's DSI Comedy Theater to workshop Agorafabulous! back when it was a one-woman show. So you could say that Benincasa has used Tar Heel State audiences to test out her intimate yet innately funny material. Hey, if North Carolinians can handle the stuff she's been through (she has a rather infamous anecdote about peeing in soup bowls when she was truly agoraphobic that sort of became her show-stopping number), then anyone can handle it. Her free reading starts at 7 p.m. —Craig D. Lindsey
