Re: “12 things I learned in my first year in the Triangle

Enjoyed your article! Durham is like a parade of madness. After high school I went off to college and never looked back because I only lived there my senior year in high school. Back then when people came to visit, we took them to Chapel Hill to see the madness. A few years ago I was in Durham for a few months getting my parents' house ready to sell and I had time to sit on their front porch and watch people passing by. Someone was moving a few blocks and her friends gathered on bicycles to help. There was a constant parade of people peddling by carrying as much as they could, lampshades on heads, rugs carefully rolled and balanced on handle bars; each rider laden with stuff. They were having so much fun. Later that afternoon on the way to the grocery store, I saw them gathered in the "new" yard grilling, playing corn hole, music blasting. The fun continued.

My favorite memory of that time was at the curve where Roxboro curves right and you can go downtown or onto Markam. I rounded the curve and there was a woman walking in the middle of the street. I slowed down thinking she would move over and followed her, slowly, to the roundabout at Glendale where she gave a hand signal indicating that she was making a right turn. And that's exactly what she did.
