The first three years of Samantha Crain's career suffered a litany of not-unwarranted comparisons: Her quavering but bold voice suggested to many (myself included) a cross between Joanna Newsom and Chan Marshall, while her generally gentle folk rollick style put her firmly in the young alt.rock troubadour realm, alongside Josh Ritter and labelmate Sam Quinn. Coupled with her Native American ancestry and the fact that you could barely buy her a drink when Ramseur Records released her debut EP in 2007, the focus often fell away from Crain's evocative songwriting and singing. Her second album, You (Understood), should change that. Audacious and occasionally eruptive, You (Understood) aims squarely for a mix of electrified rock and acoustic rustics and generally finds its mark. "If it feels like a natural contradiction," she sings, just as an angular, electric moment falls to a roots shuffle, "call it that and be done." —Grayson Currin
