Sam McLeod

When: Fri., June 18, 2 p.m. 2010

At the beginning of Big Appetite: My Southern-Fried Search for the Meaning of Life, Sam McLeod needs to lose some weight but his doctor won't scare him into it, saying that he needs to find his own reasons for doing so. McLeod's wife, Annie, suggests he go on a trip to his childhood neighborhood's reunion near Nashville, Tenn. So begins this mélange of a book: part memoir, part cookbook, with comedy sprinkled liberally throughout. (Food has played a large part in McLeod's life; he lists nearly every foodstuff he ate growing up in the book's dedication.) He reminisces about growing up the oldest of five boys kept in line by his fiery mom, Coco, and causing general mayhem with the neighborhood kids. Also included are recipes from the McLeod family, so you too can enjoy some good Southern eatin'. McLeod pulls into town on a tour sponsored by, appropriately enough, Waffle House. —Sarah Ewald
