This might be the gentlest movie ever made that involves a political scandal, an eccentric sheik, an M.I.A. soldier and a slow-burning romance between two people as attractive as Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt. Director Lasse Hallström's ability to make a watchable movie out of something so edgeless and predictable is a dubious achievement at best, but he is good at it. For a movie so obviously structured around a single uplifting outcome, his ability to keep the gears from creaking is almost masterful.
