About Desdemona, I think Byron Woods really misses the point. I've seen plenty of willful, nervy, haughty senator's-daughter* Desdemonas. What I loved was seeing one who was young, vulnerable, sheltered, naive, head-over-heels in love, and destroyed by the irrational abuse of the man she adored. I thought Miranda Kahn was wonderful.
*In this interpretation, the senator was no powerhouse, but had a loving heart - like his daughter.
