Sacrificial Poets

When: Wed., July 6, 6:30 p.m. 2011

The Sacrificial Poets are used to doing the unexpected. Free events aren't supposed to feature world finalists; bookstores are supposed to be quiet; Chapel Hill happenings aren't supposed to be standing room-only when school isn't in session. SacPo debunks it all. The group, a youth poetry organization that teaches workshops in Triangle high schools and competes in national competitions, puts on a showcase on the first Wednesday of each month at Flyleaf Books, including a community open mic, a featured poet and a musician. Bookshelves slide to the side and in comes a DJ, a microphone and biting social commentary, all steered by teenagers. They tackle subjects such as gender identity, hate crimes, gang violence and gentrification, merging distinctively local insights with national talent.

Tonight's showcase is headlined by Tavis "The Minister" Brunson, a member of the two-time National Poetry Slam champion team SlamCharlotte. George "G" Yamazawa Jr., SacPo's youth outreach coordinator, is the musical act and will blend his spoken word skills with his hip-hop roots. Yamazawa performed at Sundance Film Festival and Bonnaroo last year and is a World Poetry Slam finalist. —Joe Schwartz
