RYLEY WALKER

CAT'S CRADLE, BACK ROOM, carrboro

TUESDAY, MAY 12

Ryley Walker's pair of recent studio albums, 2013's All Kinds of You and this year's Primrose Green, paint the Illinois-born picker and songwriter into a corner of creative anachronism. He borrows liberally from Van Morrison, Bert Jansch and Michael Cooper—that is, other white dudes who incorporated soul, jazz and rock sensibilities into elegant Anglo folk decades ago. At their worst, his records suggest gussied-up tributes to those icons. But see Walker live. With the help of a sterling crew of Chicago improvisers, he pushes his mimetic songs into vivid new spaces, where they cough out the dust of history books and old vinyl and breath in their own fresh air. One of the best young guitarists working, Walker is an incredible musician with an erudite musical sense. He has yet to make those qualities apparent on his LPs, but he does it most every night on stage. He'll play here with a second guitarist. 8:30 p.m., $10–$12, 300 E. Main St., Carrboro, 919-967-9053, www.catscradle.com. —Grayson Haver Currin
