Ryan Bingham, Wild Feathers

When: Sun., May 12, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $20-23

Ryan Bingham is an interesting character, with talent to match his colorful backstory. No fabricated Western-wear cowboy, Bingham was a Texas rodeo rider before changing gears and scoring a major-label deal for his 2007 debut, Mescalito. His road-worn baritone is its own cautionary tale. He winds it around country-blues and roadhouse rock numbers dedicated to Texas country's usual suspects—the weary, the desperate and the not-quite-broken. He scored a Grammy and an Oscar for "The Weary Kind," the theme from the 2009 movie Crazy Heart. After his critically lauded follow-up Junky Star vindicated the buzz, Bingham left Lost Highway Records to self-release last year's Tomorrowland, which exposed a harder version of his vision. Wild Feathers opens. —Chris Parker
