Rural Alberta Advantage

Rural Alberta Advantage, Pepper Rabbit

When: Mon., March 14, 9:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $9-11

The Rural Alberta Advantage is actually based in Toronto, but one might think the band came out of nowhere given the way they surprised listeners in 2009. When the year began, the Advantage was just a hard-working Canadian indie rock trio with a self-released album, Hometowns. When the year ended, that album's combination of unapologetic earnestness and seemingly boundless passion not only earned the band loads of new fans and flowery press clippings (never mind the Neutral Milk Hotel comparisons) but also a contract with Saddle Creek Records. The Advantage's recently released second album, Departing, doesn't bring the same level of energy as the debut, instead presenting a band confident enough in its abilities to ease off the gas and change speeds. This might seem like a surprising development, but considering what's already happened to the Rural Alberta Advantage, a change like this should surprise no one. Pepper Rabbit opens the 9:30 p.m. show; tickets are $9 in advance, $11 at the door. —David Raposa
