Rubbish 2 Runway II

When: Sept. 9-Oct. 5 2014
Price: Free
FRANK Gallery's "Trashion Show" is a Project Runway challenge with a green twist. Student designers from local high schools and colleges must make a smashing garment using salvaged materials—which tends to mean garbage, though who's to say you couldn't "salvage" a bolt of organza? (It fell off a truck!) On the gallery's Flickr page, at least two of last year's models look like the most eco-friendly superheroes since Captain Planet, one sheathed in a scaly chainmail mini-dress, the other wrapped in orange nylon construction webbing. While these looks are impressively chic, others are more what you might expect—one model in an enormous paper bustle looks like she dived headlong into a grade-school arts-and-crafts table. This year, more than 20 designers put their dross dresses on the runway to compete for cash prizes, and all the garments stay on view through Oct. 5. After a V.I.P. party at 5:30 p.m. (you can buy a ticket online, ensuring you one of a limited number of seats), the doors open for free to the standing-room public at 6:30. —Brian Howe
