Rostros Del Tiempo/Faces of Time

When: Wed., Oct. 8, 7 p.m. 2014

NELSON MANDELA AUDITORIUM AT FEDEX GLOBAL EDUCATION CENTER—This screening features two documentary shorts followed by director and participant Q&As. Charles D. Thompson's Rostros del Tiempo/Faces of Time is about Mexican workers (or braceros) who protest weekly in Juarez for retirement benefits they should have earned working on U.S. farms in the mid-20th century. Sarah Garraham's A Life/Vida Propia is a portrait of Nora Méndez, a 43-year-old mother of three living in Durham. There's also a panel discussion at noon, with former bracero Don Modesto Zurita in attendance and lunch provided by Cosmic Cantina. The Rostros del Tiempo screening complements (and shares its title with) an exhibit of Thompson's photographic portraits of braceros, which can be seen at Duke's John Hope Franklin Center through Dec. 19. Pair these true stories of forgotten Latin-American farm-workers with a new show of contemporary Latin-American art at CAM Raleigh (see box on page 45). 7 p.m., free, 301 Pittsboro St., 919-962-2435, www.global.unc.edu. —Brian Howe
