Re: “The Durham-Orange County Light Rail Line Is on the Ropes Again. That Might Be a Good Thing.

"What if, this time, those Republicans who oppose light rail for all the wrong reasons—allergy to government spending, resentment of progressive city folk—happen to be right?"

This insulting reductivism, applied to anyone who disagrees with any of the progressive agenda, is what is driving the candidacy of Donald Trump. What if, quelle horreur, those non card carrying progressives are right about other things?

Why doesn't the Indy grow up and look at the issues facing Durham in an objective manner?

Re: “Who killed the Durham-Orange County light-rail project?

Downing Creek is part of Durham city and county. It is one of those anomalous Durham neighborhoods with a Chapel Hill address. I would leave it to others as to whether or not it is well-heeled. Certainly it is better off than some of the other Durham neighborhoods that have also been given short shrift in the light rail planning. The undisputedly "well-heeled pocket of Chapel Hill" known as Meadowmont was able to avoid having the danger, noise & disruption in their neighborhood although that neighborhood would not exist but for the zoning it was granted on the promise of having light rail on the pathway dedicated to that purpose. "Bait and switch" is not my model of democracy or a merit-based system. I don't know who was in the "backroom negotiations" but if I were a supporter of the light rail and I didn't make it my business to know what was in the budget for funding, I would not trumpet my ignorance.
