Every stage of Rosanne Cash's career has yielded deeply felt, memorable music. In Phase 1, then-husband Rodney Crowell helped guide Cash through numerous No. 1 country hits and almost as many stylistic shifts, from classic country to something near new wave. Then, 1990's Interiors took the autobiographical leanings of her earlier work to the extreme as it examined her breakup with Crowell. It's not only a landmark singer-songwriter record but also the entry point into Phase 2. And Phase 3 has found her assuming an almost matriarchical role in the world of introspective roots music, with her Black Cadillac from 2006—a record honoring the memories of her father, her mother, Vivian, and her stepmother, June—a third-act masterpiece. Fiddling powerhouse Mark O'Connor, owner of a half-dozen County Music Association Musician of the Year trophies, joins Cash for a collaborative evening titled Poets and Prophets, with an emphasis on Cash's populist poet dad. —Rick Cornell
