When: Wed., April 11, 7:30 p.m. 2012

The Cove, a beautifully spare book shot through with veins of lyrical prose, follows siblings Hank and Laurel Shelton as they endure the hardships of life in rural World War I-era North Carolina. Their trials are doubled by local townspeople's perception that the Sheltons carry a curse bestowed upon them by the sunless and unlucky cove where they make their home. There are times when Rash's characters threaten to become caricatures—the local Army recruiter's jealousy of veterans and Laurel's impossible good-heartedness verge on the unbelievable. But Rash's musical cant and deft plotting bring The Cove to a satisfying close. Rash reads from the novel at Quail Ridge Books at 7:30 p.m.; an additional reading is on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Regulator Bookshop in Durham. —Forrest Norman
