Re: “The right wing's twisted arguments against gay marriage

Given the economic crisis of North Carolina right now, I would like the answer to one single question from the legislators who are pursuing this Constitutional Amendment: What is the financial, social and business cost of this amendment for the taxpayers and citizens of North Carolina? I have asked them to tell me and their response has been to forward the question to my own legislator who does not support thier bill.

I can imagine that the cost of the time spent on debating this issue, of running a special referendum for the people of NC and of implementing the law will be enormous for our state when we are already cutting vital services from our state budget. Would you rather have higher quality education, better healthcare for the poor, a better funded AIDS Drug Assistance program for those of us living in the margins of poverty with HIV or a DOMA amendment in the NC Constitution when we already have a law that does the same thing? It we have to make tough economic choices now, how does this bill pass muster?

We must also consider the social costs of creating a second class of citizenship, where those who are gay, lesbian or trangendered will have to live with the consequences of feeling shunned and outcast even more than they already do. Would such a sanctioned environment of discrimination, clearly an intent of this law on some level, influence businesses to bypass North Carolina when making decisions to locate here? If they see us as a backwater where the best and brightest can not be universally attracted to work, might they shy away from bringing their economic vitality to our area?

The medical community and much of the business community have already made their positions clear: this bill is bad for North Carolina and should be voted down. I ask the good-hearted citizens of North Carolina to see through the veil to what this law is really about. It is discrimination and bigotry that we are being asked to enshrine in our most sacred governmental document. If we limit the rights of any citizen, we limit the rights of all citizens.
