Re: “MYOBathroom

When you see the state do something that makes no sense for North Carolina as a whole, that flies in the face of the GOP’s much trumpeted (and never adhered to) preference for “local control”, you should do what I was taught to do in military intelligence: “Ignore the propaganda and follow the money.” This worked well with the Russians, the Chinese, the North Koreans, Bin Laden, and it works well with our own politicians and the ultra-wealthy men holding their leash, like Art Pope, the current owner of our state legislature and governor.

You have to wonder if a man as wealthy and erudite as Mr. Pope cares one whit who pees where, and I suspect he doesn’t. But I’m quite sure he’s concerned with section 2 of HB2 which pre-empts local jurisdictions setting a municipal minimum wage. You see, in addition to the bathroom ordinance, the City of Charlotte had announced its intention to set a $15 minimum wage for city employees, which I am sure Mr. Pope and his allies saw as a slippery slope to mandating a $15 state minimum wage, a trend that needed to be stopped before it started, and HB2 accomplishes this in section 2.

Proponents clearly had good reason to think this misdirection would work. Recall the mile long lines to buy Chik-Fil-A when their CEO was under fire for funding anti-gay groups? Legislators doubtless knew they could use transgenderism to terrorize the same folks. I think it has worked largely as intended. Consider that HB2 has been on the front page of local papers since it was signed, with no mention whatever of the minimum wage.

Our lawmakers perhaps underestimated the backlash from portraying North Carolina as a state populated by phobic troglodytes. So I expect the governor and legislature may eventually back down on HB2 section 1. But they will certainly enforce the labor law preemption provisions of section 2, which I am convinced was their goal from the start. Our lawmakers may not truly care about protecting us from bathroom predators, but they certainly care about protecting Mr. Pope’s pockets.
