Romeo & Juliet: Forbidden Love Comes to North Carolina

When: March 14-17, 8 p.m. 2012
Phone: 919-213-1049
Price: $5-25

In a protest against the anti-gay-marriage Amendment 1, this production of Shakespeare's tragedy features two women in the leads as the star-crossed lovers. Ain't nothing wrong with that, I say. If you want to claim it's perverse, shouldn't you be more disturbed by the fact that the kids are supposed to be, like, 14? I don't know how things were done back then, and I don't want to know.

This production comes courtesy of a New York-based group of actors that has recently performed this show there before coming down here for a special engagement this week. Samantha Hirsch, resident director and program coordinator at New York's Storahtelling, directs this show, while producer Victoria Tucci, a graduate of Elon University and Circle in the Square Theatre School, plays Romeo. There'll be some after-show talkback with the cast and a look at how Shakespeare's text promotes tolerance. Performances are Wednesday–Saturday at 8 p.m.; tickets run $5–25. —Zack Smith
