Rockabilly Retro Friday

When: Fri., Nov. 22, 5:30 p.m. 2013
Price: Free
As much as the NCMA's Porsche by Design: Seducing Speed exhibition has been all about, well, Porsches, it seems the late Steve McQueen has been a constant figure throughout the festivities. His 1958 Porsche Type 356A Speedster 1600 Super is included in the show, and the museum also screened his 1968 cop classic Bullitt a few weeks ago as part of its "Car Crazy" film series. McQueen makes another big-screen appearance this week as his 1971 film Le Mans plays for free during the museum's "Rockabilly Retro Friday" event. McQueen stars as an American racer competing in 24 Hours of Le Mans, an actual race in France that still exists. It was a flop upon its release; none of the movie's principal players, including McQueen, says a word in the first half-hour, a move that proved too bold and distinctive even for '70s American audiences. But it's still a fascinating, suspenseful look behind the driver's wheel, both figuratively and literally. —Craig D. Lindsey
