Robert Randolph & the Family Band

When: Sun., May 12, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $22-25

For a time, Robert Randolph was just a kid learning to play praise music in his family's House of God Church, one in a long line of guitarists coming through the ranks of the Sacred Steel tradition. Since the 1930s, this African-American Pentecostal music has traded droning organs for the yearning of slide guitar. But Randolph realized that 80-year-old traditions collect dust unless you push their boundaries. With the Family Band, he thrusts sacred steel out of the sanctuary and into the spotlight, trading on '70s funk influences and blues-styled licks. Randolph and the band worked with producer T Bone Burnett on 2010's We Walk This Road, which marries their energetic style and sense of tradition for a celebration of the last 100 years of African-American music. The inspirations span from blues field recordings to modern rock tunes, showing off Randolph's wily ability to push past parameters. —Ashley Melzer
