Robert Plant and the Band of Joy

Robert Plant & the Band of Joy, North Mississippi Allstars

When: Wed., Feb. 2, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $45-65

Like finding a $20 bill in an jeans pocket, Robert Plant's resurgence is a pleasant, wholly unexpected surprise. Has Mick Jagger ever released a decent solo album? Roger Daltrey? In the '80s, Plant released a string of solo albums of rapidly diminishing quality. After a nearly decade-long hiatus, Plant returned in 2002 with Dreamland, which served notice of his continuing relevance. A terrific covers album with wonderful reinventions of Bob Dylan, Tim Buckley and Jimi Hendrix classics, it went largely unnoticed. A subsequent album of originals, Mighty Rearranger, attracted more attention, but nothing befitted his legendary status until he collaborated with Alison Krauss for 2007's eclectic, roots-oriented Raising Sand.

While Plant's vocal range and expressiveness were always showstoppers, he's never been properly credited as an interpreter. (Ironic, given Led Zeppelin's liberal appropriations from old blues artists.) Witnessing his recent stylistic range has remedied that, and his latest, Band of Joy, proves he's still as vital as any of his '60s British rock contemporaries. His backing band on the album and tour includes renowned guitarist Buddy Miller, continuing from the Raising Sand project, and the stellar singer-songwriter Patty Griffin. —Chris Parker
