Robert Earl Keen, Deep Dark Woods

When: Sun., Jan. 29, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $22-25

He's the dean of Texas Country singer-songwriters and among the first to turn Austin into a mecca for the musical style. Robert Earl Keen and Lyle Lovett attended Texas A&M in the mid '70s, picking on their porch into the early morning. When Lovett went to Nashville, Keen tried to follow, but he soon returned to Austin. His plainspoken, blue-collar-but-literate country-rock has since helped inspire a quarter-century of followers. Over the years, he's displayed a rare ability to bridge the rowdy, hat-wearing, beer-in-the-air crowd and the heartfelt acolytes of Townes Van Zandt. That look is epitomized by his iconic, much-covered "The Road Goes On Forever," built around a hard-drinking, truck-driving, cop-killing couple. Deep Dark Woods opens the 8 p.m. show. —Chris Parker
