Robert Earl Keen, Andrea Davidson

When: Wed., Oct. 23, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $22-25
Robert Earl Keen Jr. didn't start the whole "Texas Music" subgenre—that would be Jerry Jeff Walker primarily, and Willie Nelson tangentially. But he was the one in charge when it metastasized, for better (Jack Ingram, Bruce and Charlie Robison) and for worse (Pat Green, Cory Morrow). It'd be nice if Keen's songwriting reputation didn't also conceal how good an interpreter he is. Check out his definitive takes on James McMurtry's "Levelland" and Terry Allen's "Amarillo Highway" or the version of Billy Joe Shaver's "Live Forever" that has often provided the perfect onstage encore. As for Keen's own tunes, the crowd will inevitably shout itself hoarse requesting the hokey "Merry Christmas From the Family," but with luck he'll deliver hidden gems such as "Love's a Word I Never Throw Around" or "Paint the Town Beige." —Peter Blackstock
