Robert Crease

When: Wed., Aug. 24, 7 p.m. 2011

Bah! Metrics! Everyone knows that system was developed by a bunch of godless commie socialists out to make us conform to their hippie way of thinking! First you convert to metrics, then the next thing you know you're saluting a statue of Stalin and bragging about how many kilometers per hour your car gets! I'll keep my miles, thank you very much! But if you're willing to be brainwashed by this leftist propaganda, feel free to check out Robert Crease's new book,

World in the Balance, in which he explains how a global system of weights, scales and measuring instruments was invented, with historical figures such as Thomas Jefferson thrown in. There's information about the origins of measurement in ancient China, and about the role measurement plays in our daily lives. Crease will read from and sign copies of his book at 7 p.m.; but if he starts going on about that metric system, call Homeland Security right away! They're trying to subvert our feet-based way of life! Red dawn! RED DAWN! —Zack Smith
