Rickey Smiley

When: Sat., Aug. 24, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $40-100

If there’s such a thing as being a reliable black comedian, Rickey Smiley would so fit that description. The Mobile, Ala.-born Smiley has been entertaining black audiences for so long with his ghettocentric humor—doing observational bits that appeal to everyone in the African-American spectrum, from inner-city hoodrats to backwoods bamas—it seems the thought of him doing material for mainstream audiences has never crossed his mind. (It looks like he doesn’t need to do it either—his standup skills have gotten him his own syndicated morning radio show as well as his own sitcom—titled The Rickey Smiley Show, of course—on TV One.) But even though his jokes always kills with the urban (read: Love & Hip Hop-watching) crowd, he never comes off as being exclusionary. With his lanky frame and impish grin, doing the sort of mild-but-effective gags that could make grandmothers cackle off their rockers (he even has a churchgoing old-lady character he occasionally dips into onstage), the aptly-named Smiley is a comic the whole family—and all families—can embrace. —Craig D.
