Rhiannon Giddens may not be the first member of the celebrated neo-folkies Carolina Chocolate Drops to strike out on her own, but Tomorrow Is My Turn, the solo LP she released at the beginning of this year, damn near eclipsed the not-insignificant impact of the band she still calls her home base. Like her work with the Chocolate Drops, the music Giddens makes under her own name re-contextualizes several strands of American roots music. Whereas the band’s records were clearly the product of a collective, Giddens somehow manages to come off sounding like an auteur even when interpreting tunes whose history reaches back several generations. —Jim Allen
