Retrofantasma: Halloween II and The Serpent and the Rainbow

When: Fri., Aug. 5, 7 p.m. 2011
Price: $6

"They're Never, Never, Never Really Dead!" is the theme of this Retrofantasma double feature, which pairs a well-known sequel with a deeply underrated entry in a horror legend's oeuvre. First at 7 p.m. is 1981's Halloween II, the film that proves no matter how many times you stab, burn, hit or hurl an escaped mental patient in a spray-painted William Shatner mask out the window, he'll be back to hassle Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance once again. Jamie Lee just brings it on herself by being so good at screaming, or whatever. Next up is Wes Craven's 1988 flick The Serpent and the Rainbow, in which Bill Pullman heads to Haiti and learns way the hell more about voodoo than anyone ever should. Loosely, loosely based on true stories of "zombie powder" and other hallucinogens, it performed respectably at the box office, but has often been overshadowed by the splashier Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream franchises in Craven's C.V. Tickets are $6, cash only. —Zack Smith
