Retrofantasma Classics

When: Fri., April 12, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $9

Two of the all-time classic Universal monsters—which inspired many, many, many, many sequels, remakes and adaptations—make up this Retrofantasma program. It's the original of The Mummy from 1932 with Boris Karloff as the resurrected Imhotep, who just wants to get back with the reincarnation of his ex-girlfriend. We can relate, right? It's followed by 1933's The Invisible Man, who everyone who's ever heard the theme to Rocky Horror knows was Claude Rains. James Whale's adaptation of the H.G. Wells classic features then-groundbreaking special effects that are still pretty darn unsettling, and a great megalomaniacal performance from a heavily bandaged Rains. Fun fact: Comedy great Preston Sturges worked on the script, but his work was largely rewritten after Whale found it "unsatisfactory." Check out two of the films that set the tone for American monster movies—but get there early, as the last double feature like this at the Carolina filled all 200 seats. —Zack Smith
