Retrofantasma Classics

When: Fri., Aug. 3, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $8

Two of the best cinematic adaptations of Agatha Christie's work play at the Retrofantasma Classics series tonight. First up is 1957's Witness for the Prosecution, Billy Wilder's take on a murder trial where barrister Charles Laughton must defend playboy Tyrone Power (in his last screen appearance), despite the apparent ambivalence of Power's wife (Marlene Dietrich). There is one of cinema's all-time great twists in this one, but damned if we're going to spoil it for you. Wilder's biggest contribution to the story was the addition of some witty banter for Laughton and his character's housekeeper, played by Laughton's real-life wife, Elsa Lanchester (she was the bride of more than just Frankenstein).

It's followed by the last remaining 35 mm print of the 1974 adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express, with Albert Finney as Hercule Poirot investigating a gallery of all-stars including Sean Connery, Vanessa Redgrave, John Gielgud, Anthony Perkins and Ingrid Bergman, who won an Oscar for her role. Also, to ease your mind—neither of these mysteries boils down to "the butler did it." Eight dollars gets you into the double feature, which starts at 7 p.m. For more information, visit carolinatheatre.org. —Zack Smith
