Retrofantasma Classic

When: Fri., Nov. 5 2010
Price: $8

Retrofantasma Classic's latest double feature includes one of the best horror films of the 1950s and one of the ... well, it's not without its charm. The classic is 1957's The Incredible Shrinking Man, adapted from Richard Matheson's novel. Matheson, who wrote pretty much half the classic horror stories of TV and film (see: the original Night Stalker TV movie; Duel, Stephen Spielberg's first full film; many Twilight Zones, including the one with William Shatner and the gremlin on the wing of the plane; the original novel of I Am Legend; that Trilogy of Terror anthology with Karen Black stalked by a "Zuni Fetish Doll"; and about 500 others). Grant Williams plays a man who, due to a bunch of scientifically wonky stuff, begins gradually losing a few inches at a time, to the point where a house cat and a spider become a bit of a problem. Produced with groundbreaking effects for the time, which are still pretty entertaining, the film still maintains some of the darker themes of losing power and emasculation from Matheson's original novel, plus, you know, giant spiders. It's followed by the less earth-shattering special effects of another 1957 film, The Giant Claw, which involves an attack from a giant prehistoric bird from "17,000,000 B.C." and from outer space, no less. Using very cheap special effects and a ton of stock footage, the result was so inept that star Jeff Morrow actually snuck out of a hometown screening in embarrassment. Get some thrills and laughs for $8 at 7 p.m. —Zack Smith
