Retrofantasma Classic

When: Fri., July 9, 7 p.m. 2010
Price: $8

Retrofantasma pays tribute to the master of gimmick cinema, William Castle, with two of his best films. First, it's the original 13 Ghosts, presented in the original "Illusion-O" format with glasses that either intensify the ghosts or render them invisible, depending on which filter you look through. Then there's Homicidal, where audience members will again have a "Fright Break" option of sitting out the ending if they are too scared, provided they sit in the "Coward's Corner" and filled out a card certifying that they are, in fact, a coward. Let us not forget that Castle, who was the subject of an homage in Joe Dante's Matinee, also produced the truly terrifying Rosemary's Baby, but his gimmicks were in a class by themselves. And please attend tonight's screenings en masse, so Retrofantasma will have to do The Tingler with the seats wired like in the original production. You must admit, this has got to be more entertaining than seeing The Last Airbender in 3-D. Eight bucks buys you tickets for the double feature, which starts at 7 p.m. —Zack Smith
