Reptar, Casual Curious, The Brand New Life

When: Tue., June 18, 8:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $10-12

Earlier this year, Casual Curious released a cover of The Beach Boys' "'Til I Die." The late-career gem from the oft-overlooked Surf's Up seems an odd choice for the Greensboro outfit, which most often tinges its electro-leaning indie rock with bursts of saxophone and synthesizer that push toward prog-level complexity. But the cover—an excellent one—highlights their knack for bittersweet emotion, an ability that occasionally lends unexpected gravity to the group's Afropop noodling. Reptar, a similarly sheeny rock band from Athens, Ga., would be an excellent example for Casual Curious to strive toward. Melodies with African and Caribbean roots ricochet through effects but ultimately are elevated by powerfully impassioned vocals. The Brand New Life opens. —Jordan Lawrence
