RENNIE HARRIS PUREMOVEMENT

REYNOLDS INDUSTRIES THEATER, DURHAM

FRIDAY, OCT. 23–SATURDAY, OCT. 24

Choreographer Rennie Harris is hip-hop dance's Generation Zero—and one of the first artists to fully fuse it with theatrics and contemporary and modern dance. His evening-length Rome & Jewels, which merged Shakespeare, West Side Story and the film The Warriors into a tale of gang conflict on the streets of "Killadelphia," was a revelation at the 2001 American Dance Festival. At Duke Performances, his company opens with 2014's Nuttin' but a Word, set to the percussive electronica and jazz-funk of Osundale and Raphael Xavier. Nuttin' is "exemplary of Harris' choreographic freshness in this genre; he never stops writing new vocabulary," said The Dance Journal. The evening closes with Continuum and Students of the Asphalt Jungle, repertory works which, according to The New York Times, display Harris' "razor eye for threading virtuosic moves ... into a tapestry of elegantly fluid popping and locking or simple walking patterns." 8 p.m., $10–$38, 125 Science Drive, Durham, 919-684-4444,
