The documentary Rem Koolhaas: A Kind of Architect is a biography of the great Dutch architect, as told through the eyes of his colleagues and friends and, occassionally, in his own voice. Before he was an architect, Koolhaas studied film; in 1969 he co-wrote and co-directed The White Slave, a Dutch film noir and, at that point, the most expensive movie filmed in the Netherlands. As an architect at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, Koolhaas along with his colleagues designed some of the most distinctive buildings in the world, including Seattle's Central Library, Portugal's Casa da Música and the controversial and incredible China Central TV Headquarters in Beijing. In 2000 he won the Pritzker Prize, the most prestigious award in the field. He has published landmark books, most notably his 1978 history-as-manifesto Delirious New York and 1995's encyclopedic S,M,L,XL. So what kind of architect is Koolhaas? The New York Times calls him "an architect of extraordinary talent and the profession's reigning enfant terrible." Time says he's one of the most influential people in the world. However you answer this documentary's subtle question, rest assured that Koolhaas approves: "It's the only film about me that I like," he says. —Meg Stein
