Reif Larsen

When: Wed., May 5, 7:30 p.m. 2010

Reif Larsen's debut novel, The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet, is a quirky volume in every sense of the word. The perfectly square book tells a fictional narrative—albeit one that corresponds to dozens of maps, drawings and notes in the margins. And the story is equally unusual—12-year-old Tecumseh Sparrow Spivet, a genius mapmaker who is stuck on a Montana ranch with a family that includes a cowboy father and a scientist mother, runs away when he wins a prestigious award from the Smithsonian. Told in Tecumseh's detached first-person voice, the story chronicles his growing maturity and understanding of his family as he encounters a variety of unusual individuals. Larsen, who sold this book for a reported cool million at only 28 years of age, will read from and sign copies. —Zack Smith
