Violinist Regina Carter has one ear in the future and the other in the distant past. The Detroit native continues her ethnomusicological plundering of her family’s history with Southern Comfort, which focuses on her paternal grandfather, an Alabama coal miner who passed away before she was born. Carter and her ensemble rearranged work songs, prison songs and gospel and children’s songs to tease out threads of the African Diaspora with a contemporary sound. Violinist Gabriel Pelli of The Old Ceremony leads a pre-show talk an hour before the Saturday shows in the Upchurch Rehearsal Hall. —Chris Vitiello
