Reefer Madness | North Raleigh Arts & Creative Theatre | Stage | Indy Week
This is a past event.
When: Oct. 9-25 2015

NORTH RALEIGH ARTS AND CREATIVE THEATRE—"Its first effect is sudden, violent, uncontrollable laughter. Then come dangerous hallucinations ... followed by emotional disturbances ... the loss of all power to resist physical emotions ... leading finally to acts of shocking violence, ending often in incurable insanity!" The lurid 1936 exploitation film Reefer Madness tried to warn us: Marijuana, "the green assassin," leads to psychosis, nymphomania and, even worse, an affinity for improvised jazz. In Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney's 1999 musical send-up, wholesome teenagers Jimmy (Zak Casca) and Mary Jane (Ashley Jones) are drawn into a web of violence, sex and (gaasp!) syncopation after those first fatal puffs. At NRACT, Jon Todd directs; Craig Johnson leads the band. 8 p.m. Thurs.–Sat.; 3 p.m. Sun., $12–$20, 7713-51 Lead Mine Road, Raleigh, 919-866-0228, —Byron Woods
