Action/Adventure, Drama

Hopelessly square and irredeemably corny, Red Tails isn't just set in 1944: Substitute an all-white cast and subtract a few genteel swear words and you'll end up with a movie that could have been made in 1944. The acting is wooden and the dialogue predictable, but this story of the Tuskegee airmen proves enjoyable entertainment. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard lend a little gravitas as senior officers, but feuding best friends Nate Parker and David Oyelowo carry the film. George Lucas personally financed Red Tails and the Industrial Light and Magic-created air warfare scenes are thrilling, managing to multiply what looks like only four actual P-51 Mustangs into dueling armies. There are no mediating white authority figures; it's the air aces' story, an Uplift the Race action movie that uplifts the human race. The fighter pilots are heroes, and there are no mixed feelings about bombing Nazis. Take your grandparents: You'll all have a grand time.
