Red Collar, Death Becomes Even the Maiden, Free Electric State

When: Sat., July 17, 10 p.m. 2010
Price: $5

Red Collar's chunky churn has an unmistakable '80s air, as guitars veer from prickly post-punk to anthemic alt-rock, as capable of the scabrous as the exultant. Frontman Jason Kutchma's gruff vocals drip disaffection, weighing what's expected against what his soul requires. Formed from the ashes of Gerty!, Free Electric State's April debut Caress employs thick resounding chords that pinwheel at oblique angles like Seam trapped in a Jawbox. They're led by Shirlé Hale's dreamy croon, effortlessly skating over the sonic swells. Also, Columbia, S.C.'s Death Becomes Even The Maiden. Chris Parker
