Red Clay Ramblers

When: Fri., Nov. 15, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $24-34
String bands and Tony Awards go together like horses and roller skates, right? Not if you're The Red Clay Ramblers. This homegrown outfit has been working for four decades, morphing along the way to drop all three founders but keeping the band's spirit intact. That essence isn't a simple thing, either: Bluegrass, gospel, rock, country, and New Orleans jazz are just some of the sounds that permeate this Red Clay.

Their music has found a home on lauded records, in musicals and even at the ballet. (Take that, Skating Stallion!) Their "Carolina Jamboree," first performed in 2005 by the Carolina Ballet, was reprised in 2008 and 2011, and again this past April at DPAC. You never know when or where the group will pop up, whether in UNC-TV docs (Moving North Carolina, hosted by Bland Simpson) or playing Celtic jams outside of Carrboro's Steel String Brewery (on Monday evenings, as the Shamrockers). This show is one of those special moments when the band plays its home turf in full form. —Ashley Melzer
