Rebecca Gates, Megan Reilly

When: Fri., July 27, 9:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $8-10

After an 11-year break from music, Rebecca Gates, formerly of boy/ girl duo the Spinanes, returned this year with The Float. Credited to Rebecca Gates and the Consortium, and featuring personnel from Wild Flag, the Decemberists and many others, The Float sounds like all those aforementioned bands swirled together yet grounded by Gates' singular, conversational vocals. It's a familiar mold for Gates, as The Spinanes eventually morphed into a solo recording project that shuffled in, at one point or another, Elliott Smith, members of Tortoise, the Sea and Cake and the Mekons. For now, think Kim Gordon with voice lessons and less of a chip on her shoulder. Megan Reilly opens the show. —Brandon Soderberg
