Raven, Blatant Disarray

When: Sat., Sept. 14, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $15
Forming in the mid-1970s as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal swelled around them, Raven showed early promise. Labelmates to Venom and tourmates to Metallica and Anthrax, they played snarling, Judas Priest-inspired metal that served as a sort of proto-thrash and eventually landed the band a contract with Atlantic Records in the mid-'80s. Commercial success mostly eluded Raven, but they soldiered on. Not even the 2001 accident that crushed guitarist Mark Gallagher's legs could keep the band inactive for long; they returned to the stage in 2008 and released their latest album, Walk Through Fire, on Metal Blade Records in 2010. Raleigh thrashers Blatant Disarray open. —Bryan C. Reed
