RANDALL BRAMBLETT

SOUTHLAND BALLROOM, RALEIGH | SATURDAY, SEPT. 26

After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in psychology, Randall Bramblett considered the seminary. Instead, he pursued an advanced study of rock 'n' roll, with stints as a band member, session musician, solo artist and touring musician dotting his résumé since the early '70s. Musicians speak his name with reverence, but without a certifiable hit record among his credits, he remains consigned to the status of "best singer-songwriter you've never heard of." At last, his latest, Devil Music, could change that. A mix of distorted blues and R&B and loops and swamp grit, it distills the inclinations of a man who may not have been born into the blues but who connects with them on a soul level. "Blues was not all just drinking and chasing women," he says. "It also had a power of its own, and that's what I was thinking about. You can call it devil music if you want to, but it's older than the Bible." 7 p.m., $15–$18, 614 N. West St., Raleigh, 919-821-0023, www.southlandballroom.com.David Klein
