The molecular nitrogen(N2)in our atmosphere is essentially inert due to the strength of its bond(its valence electrons are all committed in the bond. Other forms of nitrogen containing molecules,including many used in industrial applications, can be highly reactive. Nitrogen is essential to all known life on earth and in some form or another must often be fixed( put into usable form) by microbes that enable plant life to utilize the element for metabolism and later transfer that usable form to the animals that consume them. Nitrogen fertilizers provide usable nitrogen molecules to soil microbes in areas where the soil is deemed to be depleted of natural nitrogen compounds. Those fertilizers(and other N containing molecules) are biologically active and potentially dangerous. Hope that over-simplificated answer was helpful.
